Backstory on my film journey:
I took an interest in videography and filmmaking during the DV camcorder era circa 2005. I took the family camcorder on the road with me to the art shows we exhibited at during the summers. I recorded van life, the artist life, and our adventures across the midwest. Then I helped shoot and produce a short Star Wars-inspired film for a junior high project. I produced short films throughout high school and college of low caliber. It wasn't until 2020 that I felt a renewed affinity to shoot video - so I dove in head first with a Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K.
Since then I haven't looked back. With the awesome power of modern computation, mass manufacturing, and the public's addiction to YouTube, video production has engaged warp drive. It has become a glamour career, trendy, and low barrier.
Primary Goal: deliver authenticity through video
From the winter of 2020 to 2022, I cut my teeth learning the fundamentals of shooting on a prosumer cinema camera. The Pocket 4K has no internal stabilization or autofocus, so it's a pure teacher. I had to quickly learn the basics of exposure, manual focus pulling, and composing for available light. The majority of this took place while I worked full-time as a fabrication assistant in the family furniture business. I was concurrently trying to sell my own designs and commissions. Jack of all trades, talented at some, master of none.
At the beginning of 2023, I decided to change my A camera setup. I sold the Blackmagic and purchased a Sigma fp with the 45mm kit lens. The big switch here was going to a full-frame format (from micro four-thirds). This forced another round of learning.
